The Swanton Pacific railroad used to excite many in California - until it burned in 2020. Hi, Romanian here. The pantograph is correct. The Contact Area is the entire top "bar" part. The overhead wire is meant to go from one side to another, to spread the wear evenly on the head, otherwise it just becomes a saw. As long as any part of the top of the pantograph is touching, you can have current in the locomotive.

    Hyce does PTC measure distance in miles/feet or in meters? Example, our ATP used to measure in meters, even with the UK ECTS, though they use mph, the system measures in meters as far as I am aware. We use the measuring feature when the train dives underground and it becomes time to announce the station as one function. I used to think ATP is not such a cool thing but then I rethought about my position and that no one complains about pilots getting extra safety features, we as train crews deserve the extra help too. Safety is a good thing.

    I honestly don't have anything against oil burners as I am in the same state as the Mt. Rainier scenic railroad. I am only ranting about the Historic Landmark side as the protections provided by the Historic Landmark would play a huge role of keeping the place/vehicle of historic value from being destroyed, but have a side effects of being strict against modifications. Like if the Historic place/vehicle did have modifications prior to becoming a historic landmark then it will be limited to the period, but if the historic place/vehicle didn't have modifications prior to becoming a historic landmark, they are screwed. So, I strongly believe that changing fuel source can have effect with the Historic Landmark, since Durango & Silverton didn't burn oil prior to becoming a historic landmark, I think soon it won't be the ridership or cost that will bite it. In the end, it still matter if the place/vehicle is a Historic Landmark or not. Virginia & Truckee for example historically burnt wood, coal, and oil so it will be easy for them. If I were to find out about this before the oil conversion, I would state my concern as the protections provided from being a Historic Landmark still play a role of keeping the railroad alive for future generations. So, I only fond out when this video came out. Also, in regards to the White Pass & Yukon route, they will end up facing the same risk as the Durango & Silverton because of the Alcos they sold after they became a Historic Landmark.

    That system is really cool honestly, and I can definitely understand the drivers worry about losing jobs, but I honestly don't think the public would allow trains to drive autonomously when its not like an airport shuttle or something.

    Hyce fun fact for you. Its been awhile since i played DV because i need to upgrade my computer to continue handling it but unless they changed it the last time i played you can stand on the cab roof and use keyboard controls to control the locomotive. Same with anywhere on any locomotive. As long as you were on it you could use the keyboard to control it. Might be handy on certain occasions your on the roof and find yourself in a pickle.

    So, I doubt you're probably going to read this message, wouldnt be surprised if you have me blocked because of how much I comment, but I digress. I was curious about boiler thickness. So I work in the school bus industry. We have a few propane buses with twin tanked under them. The tanks are rated to something like 350 PSI, I might be wrong on that number, but its pretty high, although the safety valves dont let it get above a certain threshold, I believe 140 PSI, again, might be wrong on number, but close. It shocked me to learn that the tank was around 3/16" (0.1875" ) thick. When you were working on 346, I was seeing numbers around half an inch, sometimes down to like 0.420". Why are the boilers on these locomotives so much thicker than these propane tanks? I have 3 main theories; heat, size or diameter of the boiler, metal composition. You can also add structure in there as the boiler needs to hold itself up by the firebox, but I dont think thats a primary factor in the thickness of the boiler. regards

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777 День назад

      Hey Alex! I don't tend to read all of the comments from non-channel members just because some of the general public are.... Not so kind. It's all about diameter. Hoop stress in a pressure vessel is equal to pressure * radius / thickness. Bigger radius, bigger stress, needs bigger thickness. We also have a safety factor of 4, which I have no idea how that compares to tanks.

    Thanks Hyce, as a Railroad Conductor currently this is exactly what PTC does. It’s not Full proof but it’s a backup. Still as a conductor I still have to know my territory and use the timetable charts and know where Quiet Zones are or speed restrictions are at to let the engineer know. Can’t be over speeding going into a siding. When there is a restricted speed going In or leaving out. Sometimes PTC does crap out on us so we have to follow through timetable and get word from Dispatch. But it is what is.
